We’re All Skeletons

We're all skeletons
You and Me-
Withered and decomposing
But alive all the same.

I see your bones
But you don't see mine.
"I love you"
Says the mandible
As I stare emptily into eye sockets.

We're all skeletons
You and Me-
Metacarpals and phalanges
Joined together

On yellowed grassy stalks.
I see hollowed bark; rotting carcasses
Surrounded by leafy brown teardrops-

But you see a lush green carpet
With strong and thriving oaks.

We're all skeletons
You and Me-
Time has seen many moons
And has turned us old and crippled.

You look in the mirror
Then out the stained glass
Of Christ and Virgin Mary-
Giving a scream with mouth open wide.

I look up unmoved

For you finally see
What I've seen all along.
